ADD A SECRET INGREDIENT TO RAMADAN FLATBREAD (SOMUN)

Ramadan flatbread (somun)

ADD A SECRET INGREDIENT TO RAMADAN FLATBREAD (SOMUN) A tray with prepared hot flatbreads covered with dewy paper and a row up to half the street. The same picture every Ramadan night.

  •

Sunset. Sarajevo. Baščaršija is preparing for iftar. The smells of Bosnian food mingling and announcing a meal for those who fasted. Ramadan in Sarajevo has a special charm. Is’n it? A table full of delicious Bosnian home-made specialties would not be complete without Ramadan flatbread- somun, which in the Bosnian tradition has an important place on the Ramadan menu.

In addition to the basic ingredients, one secret ingredient is added to each flat bread individually. Do you know which one? A pinch of love! A tray with prepared hot flatbreads covered with dewy paper and a row up to half the street. The same picture for every Ramadan night. And indeed, they have become a sign of Sarajevo, for which this city is widely known. Even today, there is an unavoidable part of every iftar table. In essence, it doesn’t matter when, how or from where they came to Sarajevo. What is important is that they stayed. That they stayed. Only in Sarajevo. The smell of Ramadan flatbreads still reaches all Sarajevo neighborhoods.

When a Ramadan gunner, dressed in traditional costume, fires a cannon at the end of the fast, the Sarajevo valley is filled with call to prayer, while lamps are lit on the minarets. And indeed, Ramadan in Sarajevo is special. It has a special charm. Is’n it?

Have you visited Homeland museum in a town on the Sava river?

Have you visited Homeland museum in a town on the Sava river? If you come to Gradiška, for at least one day, and not visit the Homeland Museum, as if you had never been to the city on the Sava

  •

If you come to Gradiška, for at least one day, and not visit the Homeland Museum, as if you had never been to the city on the Sava. This year, the Gradiška Homeland Museum celebrates a valuable jubilee – 50 years of successful work. Motive more for you to come to the beautiful building of the former hotel ‘Kaiser’ (Kaiser), where this institution has been located since 2005. With two permanent exhibits, historical and archaeological and a very lively cultural and documentary program in the large gallery, the Homeland Museum is recognized as a center of cultural events.

The first museum exhibition was organized by the Gradiška Homeland Museum in 1970. It is a permanent museum exhibit ‘Ways of Victory’. It covered the period from the Bosnian Uprising of 1875-1878. until the fall of 1970. It is interesting that the exhibition was opened by the President of the Assembly of BiH, Džemal Bijedić. The exhibition was accompanied by a photo-monograph printed in 9000 copies. Simultaneously with this exhibition, work was done on collecting archeological material. The research in Donja Dolina in 1974 and 1975, under the leadership of archaeologist Zdenko Žeravica, was very fruitful.

A handful of finds from Donja Dolina, in which archeological research was started by Ćiro Truhelka at the beginning of the 20th century, including a monoxyl – a boat carved in a tree trunk found in 1904, ended up in the National Museum in Sarajevo. ‘Lower Valley in Prehistory’ is the name of a permanent archeological exhibition, authored by archaeologist Milan Đurđević, and was set up in 1980. A year later, Đurđević began excavations in the town of Vrbaški, popularly known as Marija’s town, which is located on the hill Pavetnjak above Gornji Podgradac.

The Gradiška Homeland Museum received the status of a public institution in 2003, and that is when the staff strengthening of this institution began. Curator and historian Bojan Vujčić has organized a series of historical exhibitions since 2012, and the book ‘Bosnian Gradiška and its surroundings in the First World War’, which was presented at the Belgrade Fair in 2019, and the album ‘Civil Gradiška’ stand out with pride. In 2019, the Museum published the book ‘Gradiški mostovi na Savi’, author Bojan Vujčić, and at the end of the same year, the director of the Homeland Museum Bojan Vujinović published the book ‘Manastirište u Gornji Kijevci’. The Cyrillic inscription from 1301 is one of the most valuable exhibits of the Homeland Museum of Gradiška, and this year the Post of the Republika Srpska will present it on a postage stamp on the occasion of the jubilee.

Although of local importance, the Homeland Museum often performed archeological excavations in Skelani, Bakinci, Derventa, Srbac, Žitomislić, Prijedor, Šušnjari near Slatina, Laktaši and other locations. The final works on the shooting of a documentary-feature film about Veljko Čubrilović are in progress. And along with the film, Čubrilović Square is being built, on the site where the house of Čubrilović, the most famous Gradiška family, used to be.

Small wooden water mills on the Pliva river called Mlinčići – guardians of the tradition several hundred years old

Pliva water mills

Small wooden water mills on the Pliva river called Mlinčići - guardians of the tradition several hundred years old They are over 400 years old and are an example of traditional local carpentry skills.

The royal town of Jajce is located at the confluence of the rivers Pliva and Vrbas. Although the valleys of the Pliva and Vrbas have been inhabited since ancient times, this royal city began to develop in the Middle Ages, and its founder was Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvantić. The city itself was the capital of the Bosnian kings, and therefore bears the epithet of a royal city.

There are numerous sights in this city that are worth visiting, due to their historical, natural and archaeological beauty. One of these attractions are the little mills called mlinčići. They are located between the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, and they are built of oak wood. They are over 400 years old and are an example of traditional local carpentry skills.

Data from 1562 say that there were 24 mills at that time, of which only six were not in function. In the 17th century, the number of little mills increased to 26. They were then owned by landowners, and were given for use to the local population, who paid landowners a tax on flour.

Although they have not been in function for a long time, the little mills in Jajce attract a large number of tourists, but they are mostly targeted by foreign and domestic photographers. In 2009, the little mills/ mlinčići was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In May 2011, unknown perpetrators set fire to four grinders, which burned to the ground. Two years later, the burning mills were rebuilt as part of the 14th Regional Restoration Camp.
