HEARTH – A SYMBOL OF ANCIENT TIMES

HEARTH - A SYMBOL OF ANCIENT TIMES

HEARTH - A SYMBOL OF ANCIENT TIMES

  •

The fireplace was the central place or hearth of the house and family around which the family gathered, where they talked and solved household problems. It is often said or we have had the opportunity to hear: “No one will drive me out of the hearth!”, “I will guard my hearth!”, “I will return to my grandfather’s hearth!”, “This is our ancient hearth!”

Thus we repeat the vow, sometimes unconsciously, of the same depth and strength as the generations before us directed to the hearth.

One of curses, still considered most difficult is: “Let your hearth be desolated” or in the variant “Let the fire on your hearth is numb”, is an imperative folk proverb: “Do not leave the doorstep and hearth”!

The reasons for mentioning the hearth lie in the specific role it played in ancient times. It was a place of light, a place of common gathering of the family,  a common prayer. A place of warmth in the winter days, a place where food was prepared. So everything that fire represents to man, it also represents the place where fire is lit.

In addition to the people mentioning the hearth in the oaths, there are also testimonies, that our ancestors swore on the hearth itself, which was considered the same as if they had taken the oath in a holy place. The hearth was also represented a place of calming down and solving problems.

That is why our people have introduced a large number of customs related to the hearth, one part of which is prohibitions. The hearth must not have collapsed or been damaged.

The hearth must not be cursed, it must not be spat upon or dishonored. No human filth may come upon it, nor be trampled upon.

Nowadays, many hearths have been forgotten, some have long been abandoned, some have been extinguished long ago.

ADD A SECRET INGREDIENT TO RAMADAN FLATBREAD (SOMUN)

Ramadan flatbread (somun)

ADD A SECRET INGREDIENT TO RAMADAN FLATBREAD (SOMUN) A tray with prepared hot flatbreads covered with dewy paper and a row up to half the street. The same picture every Ramadan night.

  •

Sunset. Sarajevo. Baščaršija is preparing for iftar. The smells of Bosnian food mingling and announcing a meal for those who fasted. Ramadan in Sarajevo has a special charm. Is’n it? A table full of delicious Bosnian home-made specialties would not be complete without Ramadan flatbread- somun, which in the Bosnian tradition has an important place on the Ramadan menu.

In addition to the basic ingredients, one secret ingredient is added to each flat bread individually. Do you know which one? A pinch of love! A tray with prepared hot flatbreads covered with dewy paper and a row up to half the street. The same picture for every Ramadan night. And indeed, they have become a sign of Sarajevo, for which this city is widely known. Even today, there is an unavoidable part of every iftar table. In essence, it doesn’t matter when, how or from where they came to Sarajevo. What is important is that they stayed. That they stayed. Only in Sarajevo. The smell of Ramadan flatbreads still reaches all Sarajevo neighborhoods.

When a Ramadan gunner, dressed in traditional costume, fires a cannon at the end of the fast, the Sarajevo valley is filled with call to prayer, while lamps are lit on the minarets. And indeed, Ramadan in Sarajevo is special. It has a special charm. Is’n it?

Kladipoljsko lake

Kladopoljsko lake-The most beautiful lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina The shallow is overgrown with water lilies, in summer, which is an ideal opportunity for fly fishing

  •

BISTRIK SWAMP NEAR KAKANJ: HOME OF SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF PLANT AND ANIMAL SPECIES

BISTRIK SWAMP NEAR KAKANJ: HOME OF SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF PLANT AND ANIMAL SPECIES

  •

The Bistrik swamp is a protected area located a few kilometers away from Kakanj, more precisely, in the nearness of the settlement of Haljinići. It was created artificially as a result of the exploitation of an underground mine, composed of three water surfaces, of which only one, the largest one, survives throughout the year. It is a habitat for over 122 species of plants, 212 species of birds, 30 species of dragonflies, eight species of amphibians, seven species of reptiles and 13 species of mammals. In addition, several species of fish and insects also live here. In this place, migratory birds spend some time during their migrating journey, which is a unique opportunity for their more detailed study and observation.

According to official data, that fund represents two thirds of their total number in our country. Although it is relatively close to populated areas and the city itself, coming to this locality gives a feeling of complete isolation, peace and harmony, and during the warmer days, especially weekends, you can often meet many citizens of Kakanj, lovers of nature and good rest, and lately more and more cyclists.

Recognizing the importance of this habitat, the competent authorities included it in the protected area. In order to get the most complete experience of the Bistrik swamp, the documentary :”I feel like I’m in paradise”, was made.

Meet Tušnica- a mountain which survived bombing

Meet Tušnica- a mountain which survived bombing

Meet Tušnica- a mountain which survived bombing This mountain is special, based on the legend from which its name originated

According to the orientation parameter, Tušnica is located in the southwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Spatially, it is located between the Livno and Duvno fields. Its vastness occupies the area of the municipality of Livno, but also Tomislavgrad. The highest peak is Viternik, with a height of 1697 m. The mountain is not large, but it is noticed and characteristic for that part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tušnica is also known for its numerous deposits of brown coal, which stand out from the mine founded in 1888. That mine employed about 300 residents of the surrounding towns. Today, the mine is threatened with closure, and Vladimir Nazor wrote: “I peeked into the mine. Good coal… In this area, the country still offers us lignite, bitumen, sulfur, bauxite, and even iron ore… What all lies neglected and unused in the depths of our people! Just like the treasure in the Tušnica mine! ” The biggest rise of the mine reached in the sixties, when the number of employees exceeded 600 people. Also, the mine was noticed for the biggest accident that happened in 1955. The accident happened in the pit “Martinovac”, and six miners were died.

This mountain is special based on the legend from which its name originated. Namely, according to all sources, there were five brothers and two sisters, who were taken to the shores of the Adriatic, during one of the migrations. The brothers were called Klukas, Lobel, Muhlo, Kosjenc and Hrvat, and the sisters were called Tuga and Buga. One of the conspiracy theories says that Duvno and the mountain belonged to Tuga, after which the mountain was named Tušnica, while the other sister Buga belonged to the field on the southwest side of the mountain all the way to Livno.

Today, there are TV and radio transmitters on Tušnica, while during the last war in BiH they were completely destroyed. As the mountain, in addition to its beauty, also owned a mine, in ancient times a mining settlement was formed. It is called “Kolonija”, and it consisted of a wooden house and residential buildings, of which there were eight. In 1960, they installed the first TV set in the Livno field, and because of that it was necessary to build a pillar, which exceeds a height of 20 m.

Have you visited Homeland museum in a town on the Sava river?

Have you visited Homeland museum in a town on the Sava river? If you come to Gradiška, for at least one day, and not visit the Homeland Museum, as if you had never been to the city on the Sava

  •

If you come to Gradiška, for at least one day, and not visit the Homeland Museum, as if you had never been to the city on the Sava. This year, the Gradiška Homeland Museum celebrates a valuable jubilee – 50 years of successful work. Motive more for you to come to the beautiful building of the former hotel ‘Kaiser’ (Kaiser), where this institution has been located since 2005. With two permanent exhibits, historical and archaeological and a very lively cultural and documentary program in the large gallery, the Homeland Museum is recognized as a center of cultural events.

The first museum exhibition was organized by the Gradiška Homeland Museum in 1970. It is a permanent museum exhibit ‘Ways of Victory’. It covered the period from the Bosnian Uprising of 1875-1878. until the fall of 1970. It is interesting that the exhibition was opened by the President of the Assembly of BiH, Džemal Bijedić. The exhibition was accompanied by a photo-monograph printed in 9000 copies. Simultaneously with this exhibition, work was done on collecting archeological material. The research in Donja Dolina in 1974 and 1975, under the leadership of archaeologist Zdenko Žeravica, was very fruitful.

A handful of finds from Donja Dolina, in which archeological research was started by Ćiro Truhelka at the beginning of the 20th century, including a monoxyl – a boat carved in a tree trunk found in 1904, ended up in the National Museum in Sarajevo. ‘Lower Valley in Prehistory’ is the name of a permanent archeological exhibition, authored by archaeologist Milan Đurđević, and was set up in 1980. A year later, Đurđević began excavations in the town of Vrbaški, popularly known as Marija’s town, which is located on the hill Pavetnjak above Gornji Podgradac.

The Gradiška Homeland Museum received the status of a public institution in 2003, and that is when the staff strengthening of this institution began. Curator and historian Bojan Vujčić has organized a series of historical exhibitions since 2012, and the book ‘Bosnian Gradiška and its surroundings in the First World War’, which was presented at the Belgrade Fair in 2019, and the album ‘Civil Gradiška’ stand out with pride. In 2019, the Museum published the book ‘Gradiški mostovi na Savi’, author Bojan Vujčić, and at the end of the same year, the director of the Homeland Museum Bojan Vujinović published the book ‘Manastirište u Gornji Kijevci’. The Cyrillic inscription from 1301 is one of the most valuable exhibits of the Homeland Museum of Gradiška, and this year the Post of the Republika Srpska will present it on a postage stamp on the occasion of the jubilee.

Although of local importance, the Homeland Museum often performed archeological excavations in Skelani, Bakinci, Derventa, Srbac, Žitomislić, Prijedor, Šušnjari near Slatina, Laktaši and other locations. The final works on the shooting of a documentary-feature film about Veljko Čubrilović are in progress. And along with the film, Čubrilović Square is being built, on the site where the house of Čubrilović, the most famous Gradiška family, used to be.

Small wooden water mills on the Pliva river called Mlinčići – guardians of the tradition several hundred years old

Pliva water mills

Small wooden water mills on the Pliva river called Mlinčići - guardians of the tradition several hundred years old They are over 400 years old and are an example of traditional local carpentry skills.

The royal town of Jajce is located at the confluence of the rivers Pliva and Vrbas. Although the valleys of the Pliva and Vrbas have been inhabited since ancient times, this royal city began to develop in the Middle Ages, and its founder was Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvantić. The city itself was the capital of the Bosnian kings, and therefore bears the epithet of a royal city.

There are numerous sights in this city that are worth visiting, due to their historical, natural and archaeological beauty. One of these attractions are the little mills called mlinčići. They are located between the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, and they are built of oak wood. They are over 400 years old and are an example of traditional local carpentry skills.

Data from 1562 say that there were 24 mills at that time, of which only six were not in function. In the 17th century, the number of little mills increased to 26. They were then owned by landowners, and were given for use to the local population, who paid landowners a tax on flour.

Although they have not been in function for a long time, the little mills in Jajce attract a large number of tourists, but they are mostly targeted by foreign and domestic photographers. In 2009, the little mills/ mlinčići was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In May 2011, unknown perpetrators set fire to four grinders, which burned to the ground. Two years later, the burning mills were rebuilt as part of the 14th Regional Restoration Camp.

The mysterious fortress Kastel in Banja Luka

Fortress kastel

The mysterious fortress Kastel in Banja Luka Kastel Fortress is the oldest monument in Banja Luka

Kastel Fortress keeps the deepest secrets of this city, because it is the oldest monument in Banja Luka. It is located on the left bank of the Vrbas and with its massiveness it tells us about great events and greats who used it as a defensive position and military fortification from the ancient period to the new century.
The total area of Kastel is 48,000 square kilometers, the ramparts consist of nine bastions and two drops of a tower within the ramparts. It is surrounded on all sides by thick stone walls on which loopholes and observation posts have been erected, and its final shape and present-day form was given in the 18th century.
Data on its origin lead us to the second century AD in Roman times, when it was built as a military camp or Castro. The Kastel fortress is entered from three directions to the north, west and east. It is also interesting that the remains of residential buildings dating from the 8th and 12th centuries were found in the area of Kastel, and the oldest object that confirms that there was an ancient settlement is an altar dedicated to the Roman god Jupiter. On this beautifully carved stone monument, found in 1895, there is an inscription which deciphered the text: “Jupiter, the greatest genius of this place in Sicily, acrin, consular benefactor of the province of Upper Pannonia, fulfilled his vow voluntarily and with gratitude.” Several specimens of late antique bronze, pottery and one late antique bronze fibula were found inside the fortress. Descriptions and drawings from the 18th century give a picture of the fortification with numerous casemates, but also with more than 30 barns for grain.
Nevertheless, the very development of the city and the significance of the city and thus the castle began during the time of Ferhad-pasha Sokolović. Ferhad-pasha first built his fortified tophana on the site of today’s Kastel, and ten years later the tophana grew into a real fortified town with towers and basins, which was constantly extended.
Next to the fortress itself, there is an artillery workshop that was used to make cannons, rifles and gunpowder and was opened at the beginning of the 18th century. It was during this period that the most famous battle near the Kastel fortress in 1737 took place during the Turkish rule. The battle of Banja Luka was started by Austrian units under the command of General Hildenburghausen, which penetrated the Vrbas valley and began the siege of Kastel. However, the Bosnian governor Ali-pasha Hećimoglu defeated the Austrian army with a sudden attack from the hill Lauš, and so Kastel remained unconquered. In the 19th century, Kastel, like other fortresses, lost the military significance that it had before, but it was and remains, as it is on the coat of arms, the symbol of the city of Banja Luka. In 1950, the Kastel Fortress was declared a cultural and Istrian heritage site of the first category, and in 2002 it was added to the list of endangered monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
